Welcome to Barclay Friends

Barclay Friends, an affiliate of The Kendal Corporation, provides residential, assisted living, long term nursing care, and short stay care for rehabilitation in a state-of-the-art community in the borough of West Chester. Barclay Friends is dedicated to continuing to improve the care of the aging in the wider community.

Basic Quaker values are reflected in the manner of care we provide. We strive to honor the spirit, humanness, and basic rights of each older person. We respond faithfully to the needs of older people: the need for independence and self determination, the need to feel connected, and the need to have opportunities for learning, fun, reflection, and self expression. The Kendal affiliates' Values and Practices further explains our values and the spirit of community at Barclay Friends. While guided by the values of The Kendal System, each Kendal affiliate maintains an independence that fosters creative thinking.

Barclay Friends' innovative cluster design promotes a residential feeling while reinforcing the resident's orientation and a sense of belonging. The design features four "communities," one dedicated to residential and assisted living and three to skilled and long-term care. Each have their own common space and service space, plus access to central areas and amenities. Design organized into "communities" promotes informal social interaction and sharing of resources.

Easily accessible common spaces invite residents at every level of care to join Barclay Friends' life in a natural, self-determined manner. Common areas include an activity room, two dining rooms, an occupational and physical therapy center, salon/barber shop, laundry room, administrative offices, and outdoor gardens. Services and amenities are centralized and are readily accessible to family members, to staff, and to residents of all capabilities.

* Assistance from experienced staff with a warm and caring attitude is available 24 hours each day.
* Community space is aesthetically designed and decorated for comfort. Residents may decorate and furnish private apartments to their own taste.
* Dining Services enhance the lifestyle of each resident. Meals in Turks Head Cafe include flexible breakfast times, waited service for dinner and supper hours, and entree selections at each meal. Guests are always welcome.
* Located in a quiet West Chester neighborhood, the community has easy access to the attractions and amenities of the wider borough.
* Recreation programs are provided daily including trips to the local community, fitness, horticultural, and a variety of other programs.
* A full continuum of care providing residential and assisted living, rehabilitation, and nursing care is available in one community. Woolman residents can usually be accommodated in the Cotter nursing neighborhoods as need arises. They do not face the uncertainty or the ordeal of searching for a new care facility, but may remain in the community that is already their home.

* A choice of fee schedules is available. Individuals may pay either the full monthly fee or pay an entry fee and lower monthly fee.
* Couples with differing care needs may live in the same community, receiving full health care services according to individual needs. Apartments in Woolman can accommodate those needing either residential or assisted living.
* Respite Care available in Assisted Living.

Visitors, families, and residents are invited to view the current recreation calendar for assisted living residents.
